Cool Points: Pinterest 2018 Trend Predictions

Every year Pinterest publishes the Pinterest 100: 10 emerging trends for 10 key categories on their platform. They encourage brands and businesses to apply these trends in 3 ways: make new products, create relevant content, or update your branding in-store or online.

if you're a client of mine, let me know if you want to discuss how to adopt any of these trends!

Food

If you aren't in the food-industry, the broader topic to pull from here is clean alternatives - protein, coffee, desserts, cocktails, cooking styles. Keywords like clean, vegan, and healthy will get a response.

Travel

This category is more varied, but there is a slight lean toward culture, whether than means experiencing things like a local or understanding the history.  One crazy outlier was the huge spike YOY on River Cruises.  This is indicative of the growth of an older subset of the Pinterest audience - yay if that's your target! - OR River Cruises are trying to tap into younger travelers... hmm.

Home

People are looking to make a statement in 2018 - bold colors, patterns, huge wall art, and metallics. They even want to embellish their ceilings! My mom recently found glitter paint on Facebook, watch out interiors.

Kids & Parenting

The bold decorations continued in this category - with pom poms and wall decals getting a bump. But, all the glamour was countered with a strong lean toward the natural - clothes, toys, accessories, and play.

Women's Style

Talk about bold statements again, wow. The trending topics in fashion indicate women are heavily researching the hottest fads on the platform. Don't be afraid to hop on the bandwagon and use 'of the moment' items like berets, leather, and big hoops.

Men's Style

Guys are taking things the opposite way. Monochrome, microprints, and manicured beards (oh my!) indicate 2018 is going to be polished, in a masculine way of course.

Health and wellness

This category is highly varied - key topics are self-care, essential oils, and gut health.  Not too surprising if you're in the industry or just a health freak like me. However...

Vitamin C Serum went absolutely nuts. This one had me curious, so I did a quick Pinterest search to see what all the fuss was about, and somehow I totally missed this trend explosion. My bank account dodged a bullet I'm sure.

Beauty

The biggest boosts came from beauty treatments rather than bold looks, for example lip stains, facial rollers, and uses for oils.  The launch of Rihanna's Fenty Beauty line also sparked more searches for complexion-inclusive makeup.

Celebrations

Babies a big deal right now, and the millennials are using very creative ways to show them off. On the other hand, users who aren't growing another human are searching for trivia nights and milestone birthdays.

Hobbies and Interests

People are happy for campers.  Almost +1000% happy. Overall, this category is mostly outdoorsy, but a small sect is into their sweet gaming setup.  At least everyone can agree on inspirational quotes.
